What, Why and of course How: The Ninth House

After dying in the 8th house, we are reborn as new individuals – or almost new. Both the old and the new parts of us now require an explanation. What the f just took place? And why?

So, the 9th houses of our charts are where we go to look for answers. This is the part of our chart where we ask the big questions regarding our existence.

If you have been with me on this journey through the houses, you should know by now that each house is in a relationship (its opposite) with another house directly. One part of this duality represents the individual experience of a specific activity and the other the more collective. Natural opposition of the 9th house is the 3rd house – the house of the logical mind – where learning, technical learning especially, takes place – where we make basic connections through language, education, and our experience of our immediate surroundings. It follows the second house of our possessions and values.

Now, the 9th - coming after the 8th where we had entered into business with the other, and where we experienced exchange of said possessions and values - represents the abstract mind (as opposed to the logical mind of the 3rd house).

What does this mean?

This is, like I said in the beginning, about the bigger questions of life – the ones we go to philosophy, religion, law etc. to find answers to. Logical mind was only enough to make sense of the immediate surroundings. The newer and transformed “I” (as a result of the 8th house) requires deeper meanings.

This is why the 9th house also represents travel to new places, exploring new countries and cultures. Expanding our horizons and seeing or experiencing other ways of being to better understand the human condition.

Symbolic thinking or symbols enter the picture here as well. A symbol can contain an understanding, concept, meaning that words are unable to give justice too. That’s why abstract concepts and symbols often go hand in hand.

9th houses of our charts show us our basic approach and attitude towards these topics. How we go about finding answers to the big whys, whats and hows of our existences and what we might find there.

If you want to learn more about your natal ninth house and/or the rest of your chart, I recommend my Spotlight reading.
